WHAT IS MINDFULNESS?

Mindfulness is the act of bringing our full attention to what is happening in the present moment.  It is an ability to be present with each moment in life just as it is.

We experience moments of mindful joy when we are simply here with the experience that is happening right now…. Perhaps you can remember a time when a beautiful sunset took your breath away, walking through nature you were caught up in the moment or even just that moment of sitting with a cup of tea when the world stops for a few seconds? That experience of just being with what is happening and feeling the vivid and joyful moment is a an experience of mindfulness. Formal mindfulness practice develops this capacity of ‘being’ within us so that we have more moments in our lives where we are present … developing our ‘mindfulness muscle’.

Training the capacity to be present in our lives can enrich our experiences and also increases our capacity for letting go of what is not in the present (stress, worry, anxiety). Mindfulness practice can also help us to be with difficult thoughts, feelings and emotions in a more kind and healthy way, letting them pass in time without feeling as taken over by them or not fueling them as much with negative thought and rumination.

Mindfulness practices have been studied in a research context for over 35 years.

Over time regular mindfulness practice has been shown to:

  • Reduce levels of stress, anxiety and depression

  • Reduce rumination and worry

  • Manage chronic pain

  • Improve sleep quality

  • Increase feelings of self-acceptance and self-compassion

  • Develop more healthy relationships with food, alcohol and smoking

  • Improve concentration and focus
